AUTUMN TECHNICAL MEETING 2008
OCTOBER 17th 2008

The Autumn Technical Meeting will take place on Friday October 17th at the John Innes Centre, in Norwich. The meeting is again being held on a Friday so that members can build a long weekend around the visit should they so wish. We have therefore block booked a hotel and organised a Friday night dinner for those who would like to stay on. As usual we are also organising a partners' programme and hope to see as many as 15 partners join us for dinner that night. As an added incentive Mike and Molly Bennett have invited you to visit their Farm at Mattishall on the morning of Saturday 18th for refreshments. If you wish to attend please advise the Secretary.

The programme is given below. As usual, on-line registration is available and there is also a map to show you of how to find the locations. If you are staying overnight then you need to book your hotel room soon.

Further details of the event will be published as soon as available so please bookmark this web page and visit from time to time and also watch for Society News Bulletins.

Partners' Programme

We have the following options/suggestions for the Ladies program. At previous autumn meetings, the partners have agreed amongst themselves on the day the preferred location(s) to visit and where to lunch. We see no reason to change this arrangement as it has always worked well. There are likely to be sufficient cars for transportation wherever is chosen.

Options/suggestions for the Ladies program :

  • Bus tour of the historic city of Norwich. [45 min open-top bus allowing hop-on, hop-off]

  • Visit the Cathedral, Elm Hill/Princes St/London St to Norwich Market [going past nice shops, especially Jarrolds].  Then Gentleman's Walk to The Forum in Theatre St [see BBC Radio Norfolk in action] and lunch at the 5* Assembly House opposite.

  • Visit to Art Galleries: Sainsbury Centre [Modern Art], out of town at UEA  close to the John Innes Centre, then the 5*  Norwich Castle Museum [East Anglian School eg Cotman etc] and visit the dungeons while you're there.

  • -Visit to Old Buildings in Norwich: 5* Dragon Hall in King Street; 5* Strangers Hall in Charing Cross at the top of Elm Hill, an easy walk.

  • -River Wensum Trip of old Norwich.

HOW TO GET TO THE MEETING

JIC MapThe JIC is on the western outskirts of Norwich. The Maids Head Hotel is in the centre of the city, right opposite the cathedral [the address is 'Tombland'!].

By Road
The JIC is just off of the B1108 in Colney. If you click anywhere inside the red rectangle on the map to the right, a new window with directions will open up.

To get to the hotel, follow the signs to the city centre and then take the A147 inner ring road to the north of the centre. At the roundabout for the A1151 [signposted Wroxham] turn right in towards the centre along Whitefriars, following the signs for the cathedral and law courts. Whitefriars turns into Palace Street and the hotel is then about 400 metres on the right. You can find details of this route on the Maids Head's web domain.

By Rail
Norwich has a direct train link to London with an average journey time of 2 hours with trains at half-hourly intervals. Further details of train/buses from London and other origins are easily found by visiting the JIC web site.
